How does it know?

.

The OLM, standard on most 2004 and newer model GM vehicles, is a computer-based software algorithm that determines when to change oil based on engine operating conditions and vehicle use. There is no actual oil condition sensor. Rather, the computer continuously monitors engine-operating conditions, driving conditions and driver use to determine when to change the oil. Over the years, millions of test miles have been accumulated to calibrate the system for a variety of vehicles. The technology enables most GM vehicles to travel much further than a 3,000-mile interval between oil changes.

On average, vehicles equipped with an OLM will need to have their oil changed twice a year. GM has come up with a Simplified Maintenance schedule (maintenance I & II). Instead of a complicated list of different services to be performed at different mileage intervals, Maintenance I & II schedules are driven by the OLM. The first service is generally Maintenance I, second service Maintenance II, and then service alternates between the two thereafter. Using The GM Oil Life System What Can I Expect

• Highway driving 7,000 to 12,000 miles
• Urban driving 4,000 to 6,000 miles
• Trailer towing 5,000 to 7,000 miles
• Short trip service (less than two miles) 3,000 to 4,000 miles
• Typical mixed service 4,000 to 7,000 miles
